About the Downtown Chorus
BMCC DOWNTOWN CHORUS was founded in the Fall of 2006. This Chorus is dedicated to fostering and sharing the art and joy of choral music. With the goal of enriching and educating our city's downtown community, the Chorus performs music from diverse historical periods and cultures. Members include students, faculty and staff from BMCC, as well as the residents of downtown area. Downtown Chorus performs regularly on campus, including collaborations with the Downtown Symphony Orchestra on its Messiah Open Sing in December and Opera Production in May, and off campus with Manhattan Concert Productions in their spring projects at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Downtown Chorus holds regular rehearsals on Tuesdays from 7:15-9:30 pm at Fiterman Hall Room 325.
BMCC SELECT CHORUS was founded in the spring of 2005. Choir members are outstanding music students from voice and chorus classes. This Chorus has been functioning as a voluntary group; and members participate in all scheduled activities without gaining any school credit. They love the art of choral singing and share what they learn with those who have a passion for music. Among all BMCC choral and music ensembles, Select Chorus has been the most praised and recognized. Their significant achievements include the annual appearances at BMCC Honors Convocation and Commencement. In addition, Select Chorus participated at the CUNY Choral Festivals at York College and won first prize consecutively in the Classical division in the spring of 2006 and 2007. They have also been featured in the 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, 2010 US Open with Gloria Estefan and 911 Memorial for Recovery Workers on May 30, 2012. Select Chorus holds regular rehearsals on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Fiterman Hall Room 325.
BMCC COLLEGE CHORUS (MUS 410-40) functions as a choral ensemble class for one credit hour. Students are involved in the performance of standard and contemporary choral literature for mixed voices. In addition to basic choral training, this course includes performances with Select Chorus and Downtown Chorus at various concerts and college ceremonies. Open admission to all BMCC students and no auditions are required to join this class. College Chorus holds regular rehearsals on Tuesdays from 12:00-1:40 pm at Fiterman Hall Room 325.
The Chorus is looking for many new voices to join a friendly -- and varied -- core group of singers. Singers of all experience levels and of all vocal ranges are welcome. The ability to read music is a plus but not a requirement as is prior chorale experience. Interested persons should contact Dr. Eugenia Oi Yan Yau, eyau@bmcc.cuny.edu for more information.
